04 Freightliner Sprinter 2500 No Communication with Generic Scan Tool

A 2004 Freightliner Sprinter 2500 owner experienced difficulties connecting a generic OBDII scan tool. After unsuccessful attempts with a generic scan tool, an Autel MaxiDiag Elite scan tool was purchased. This tool successfully communicated with the vehicle but only when specifically set to “Sprinter mode.” It’s suspected that the Sprinter mode utilizes CAN communication. The Autel device, being port-powered, indicates functional power pins on the OBDII port. However, the inability to connect in standard OBDII mode raises questions. Further investigation into pin configurations and voltage checks are planned. While the Autel allows for Sprinter-specific code reading, the underlying issue preventing generic OBDII communication remains unresolved. This concern is amplified by an existing intermittent engine cut-out problem occurring at mid-throttle when the engine is warm. The Autel MaxiDiag Elite, priced around $350, is considered a valuable Sprinter-specific diagnostic tool, derived from the professional-grade MaxiDas DS708 software.
