Diagnosing My 2007 Polaris Sportsman with an AL590HD Scan Tool

Just purchased an AL590HD scan tool online, aiming to replace my BlueDriver for diagnosing my 2007 Polaris Sportsman. However, the initial experience has been a bit bumpy, mainly due to some unexpected issues with cable compatibility right out of the box.

The AL590HD, which is reportedly the same as the ML590HD model, arrived with three diagnostic cables. Unfortunately, using two of these cables immediately caused fuses to blow in my Polaris Sportsman upon connection. Strangely enough, a separate cable I had purchased from eBay, intended for a different purpose, ended up working. It seems that the pin configuration on the provided cables might not be fully compatible, even though they appeared to have the correct 8-pin connectors. After figuring out the cable situation, I managed to successfully pull diagnostic trouble codes with the engine running.

However, the process of trial and error with the faulty cables, and repeatedly blowing fuses, has introduced a level of uncertainty. I suspect that some of the currently displayed codes might be a consequence of these electrical disruptions rather than actual underlying issues with my Polaris Sportsman. The scan revealed a number of low voltage and short circuit related codes – five in total – which could very well stem from the fuse incidents. Additionally, I’m seeing codes for both Vehicle Speed (erratic or intermittent) and Engine Speed (erratic or intermittent). This leads me to suspect a potential problem with the speed sensor. There are also a couple of codes that I haven’t been able to identify yet: SPN614 FMI:31 and FMI:2. In total, the scan tool is showing 10 stored diagnostic codes.

My next step will be to clear all of these stored codes. Then, using the cable that has proven to work without issue, I plan to operate the Polaris Sportsman again under similar conditions to see which codes reappear. This should help me differentiate between genuine, pre-existing problems and any codes that were triggered by the initial scan tool and cable mishaps. Hopefully, this process will lead to a clearer understanding of what’s actually going on and guide me towards the real issue affecting my Polaris Sportsman.
