Retrieving diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) on a 1992 Jeep Cherokee can be done without a dedicated scan tool. This OBD1 system utilizes a simple method of flashing the check engine light to communicate fault codes.
To initiate the process, turn the ignition key to the “On” position (do not start the engine) and then “Off” three times consecutively within a five-second timeframe. Ensure the key remains in the “On” position after the third cycle. Observe the check engine light. It will begin to flash in a specific sequence.
The code is conveyed through a series of flashes. A short pause separates the flashes within a single digit, a medium pause separates the two digits of a code, and a long pause signifies the separation between different codes. For example, a code “55” (indicating no faults) would be displayed as five quick flashes, a medium pause, and then another five quick flashes.
Most models will end with code 55. Vehicles equipped with air conditioning will conclude with code 55, while those without air conditioning will end with code 33. Any other codes present will precede these concluding codes, each separated by a long pause.
The codes will continue to cycle, allowing multiple readings. Codes are cleared after 50 ignition on/off cycles or by disconnecting the battery overnight, which may temporarily trigger a code 12 (battery disconnect). Remembering this sequence allows you to diagnose issues on your 1992 Jeep Cherokee without specialized equipment.
