2009 BMW Scan Tool for Battery Registration

If you’re replacing your 2009 BMW’s battery, you’ll need a scan tool to register the new battery with the car’s computer. This process ensures that the vehicle’s charging system functions correctly with the new battery. While the process may seem daunting, it can be done with the right scan tool and information.

Battery Registration Process with a BMW Scan Tool

Before starting the registration process, gather some essential information from the new battery:

  • Matrix Code: This is an 11-digit alphanumeric code. Most replacement batteries don’t include this code.
  • Supplier Code: A 6-digit numeric code.
  • Polarity Code: A 4-digit code usually stamped on the negative terminal.

With this information and a compatible BMW scan tool, follow these steps:

  1. Connect the Battery: Ensure the new battery is correctly connected to the vehicle’s terminals.
  2. Connect the Scanner: Plug the scan tool into the OBD-II port and power it on.
  3. Vehicle Selection: Select BMW as the manufacturer and choose the automatic vehicle identification option. The scanner will retrieve the VIN. Click continue.
  4. Navigate to Battery Registration: Go to the maintenance menu, then body, then power supply (battery). Select “register battery.”
  5. Answer Prompts: The scanner will ask if you are replacing with the same battery type, a different Ah rating, or switching to an AGM battery. Select the appropriate option.
  6. Enter Battery Information: The scanner will prompt you to enter the Matrix code, Supplier code, and Polarity code. Enter the information gathered earlier. If you don’t have the Matrix code, select “no” and enter the Supplier code. If you are missing the Polarity code, you can often use the battery’s in-service date.

While the Supplier and Polarity codes might not be crucial for the registration process, the system often requires input for these fields. Even if unavailable, entering placeholder information can allow the registration to complete successfully.

Completing the battery registration process with a compatible scan tool ensures the optimal performance and longevity of your new battery and helps maintain the overall health of your 2009 BMW’s electrical system. This process will also reset the battery monitoring system, preventing unnecessary warning lights or system malfunctions.
