Canon Easy Scan Tool: Troubleshooting Windows 10 Scanner Issues

My Canon MG3620 printer could print from both my Windows 10 PC and iPhone, but scanning from the PC was impossible. The printer was clearly connected to the network, confirmed by successful print jobs. However, various Windows 10 scanning applications, including Paint, Fax & Scan, and the dedicated Scan app, couldn’t detect the scanner functionality. Only the printer was recognized.

Power-cycling the printer didn’t resolve the issue. In retrospect, disconnecting and reconnecting the power cord might have been worth attempting. This scanning problem recurs approximately four times a year.

Ultimately, rebooting the PC solved the problem. This suggests the issue originates within Windows 10 rather than the Canon device itself.

My system utilizes a Microsoft-provided 32-bit driver from 2006 for the Canon MG3620, which relies on ksthunk.sys. This outdated driver could be the root cause. It’s unclear why Microsoft hasn’t implemented a modern 64-bit driver for this printer model, perhaps due to compatibility with Canon’s firmware.

The printer’s network configuration printout revealed no anomalies, except for occasional channel switching between 10 and 11.

The most likely culprit is the antiquated 2006 32-bit driver malfunctioning for unknown reasons. A simple PC reboot often resolves the issue, pointing towards a Windows 10 problem.
