After Updating to VCDS, Can No Longer Find Controller Cable

If you’re experiencing connection issues with your VCDS cable after a recent update, you’re not alone. This problem can manifest in several ways, such as VCDS not recognizing the interface or reporting “Unable to open interface.” This guide outlines a potential solution involving the interface’s reboot functionality.

One user reported experiencing this issue with a Hex-V2 and Hex-Net interface on a Dell tablet running Windows 8. Initially, neither interface was recognized by VCDS, and the software indicated no updates were available. Attempting to access VCIConfig resulted in an error message stating, “Unable to open interface, it may be used by another program.” Subsequent attempts led to a new error: “Unable to read versions. If interface is on and not in use, try rebooting it.”

The solution involved utilizing the red reboot button located on the Hex-Net interface. With the tablet powered on and the Hex-Net connected (indicated by a flashing red LED), pressing the reboot button initiated the process.

Following the reboot, accessing the “Download & Update” tab within VCIConfig resulted in the same initial error message about the interface being in use. However, after persisting and allowing the process to complete, the interface successfully updated. Testing the connection through the “Options” and “Test” functions in VCDS confirmed the issue was resolved.

This experience suggests that the interface may have locked up during a previous update, preventing proper communication with the software. The reboot button proved crucial in resolving the issue. While this specific solution pertains to a Hex-Net, similar principles might apply to other VCDS interfaces. If you encounter connection problems after a VCDS update, exploring reboot options on your interface could be a viable troubleshooting step. Always ensure your VCDS software and interface firmware are up to date to minimize potential conflicts.
