This guide provides a detailed walkthrough for calibrating the steering angle sensor on a MK7 vehicle using VCDS (Vag-Com Diagnostic System). This procedure mirrors the G85 calibration in ODIS, offering a DIY alternative. While not yet verified on a vehicle, this process follows the documented steps.
Edge Detection
This initial step focuses on detecting the steering angle sensor’s index mark and slope detection indexes.
-
Preparation: Start the engine and ensure the front wheels are pointing straight ahead.
-
Security Access: Navigate to [44 – Steering Assist] in VCDS. Enter [Security Access – 16] and input the code 19249. Select [Do It!].
-
Advanced Measuring Values: In [Adv. Meas. Values], select the following:
- [IDE04510-MAS03732] Steering angle sensor: slope detection index – Steering angle speed negative dropping slope on curve
- [IDE04510-MAS03733] Steering angle sensor: slope detection index – Steering angle speed negative rising slope on curve
- [IDE04510-MAS03734] Steering angle sensor: slope detection index – Steering angle speed positive dropping slope on curve
- [IDE04510-MAS03735] Steering angle sensor: slope detection index – Steering angle speed positive rising slope on curve
- [IDE04510-MAS03736] Steering angle sensor: slope detection index – Index mark
-
Steering Wheel Rotation: Slowly rotate the steering wheel to the right and left, encompassing the index mark (approximately 45°). Continue until all four slope detection indexes are recognized (detected) and the index mark value changes to (1). Select [Done, Go Back].
Steering Angle Sensor Calibration
This step utilizes Basic Settings to calibrate the sensor.
-
Basic Settings: Navigate to [Basic Settings – 04] and select [Show Measuring Data]. Choose the following:
- [IDE02216-IDE05795] Steering angle sensor: basic setting – End basic setting
- [IDE02216-MAS03161] Steering angle sensor: basic setting – Start
-
Initiate Calibration: In Basic Settings, select [MAS00815] Steering angle sensor and then [Go!]. The status should display “Running.”
-
Steering Wheel Movement: Slowly turn the steering wheel to the right and left mechanical stops. Return the steering wheel to the center position. The status should change to “Permitted” (IDE02216-MAS03161 or IDE02216-IDE05795). Note: This “Permitted” status may not appear during testing.
-
Calibration Completion: After the “Permitted” status (if displayed), keep the steering wheel stationary and pointed straight. Wait for the status to indicate “Finished correctly.” Then select [Stop]. Note: During testing, no faults or warning lamps were observed, even without the “Permitted” status.
Evaluation (No VCDS Needed)
This final step verifies the calibration without VCDS.
-
Steering Wheel Test: Turn the steering wheel to the right end stop, then to the left end stop, and finally back to the center position.
-
Fault Lamp Check: Observe the yellow fault lamp on the dashboard. It should extinguish.
-
Final Steps: Stop the engine and check for any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). Clear any existing DTCs.
