Passat B5.5 VCDS Coding: A Comprehensive Guide

This guide provides a comprehensive overview of VCDS coding for the Volkswagen Passat B5.5. We’ll cover various modules and common coding procedures. Ross-Tech is not responsible for any damage resulting from these instructions. Use them at your own risk.

Engine Module (01 – Engine)

The Engine module allows for adjustments to idle speed and throttle body adaptation, as well as activation of certain features like cruise control.

Idle Speed Adaptation

Note: Consult your repair manual for specific instructions.

With the engine warmed up and idling:

  1. Select: 01 – Engine
  2. Adaptation – 10:
  3. Channel 01: Enter an adaptation value between 124 and 132.
  4. Save:

Throttle Body Adaptation

Important: Do not touch the accelerator and ensure the engine is OFF.

  1. Turn the key ON, but do NOT start the engine.
  2. Select: 01 – Engine
  3. Measuring Blocks – 08: Group 060 or Group 98.
  4. Go!
  5. Switch to Basic Settings: Observe “ADP RUN” in the display. The adaptation process begins automatically. Values will change, and you’ll hear the throttle body cycle.
  6. Leave in Basic Settings for approximately 30 seconds.
  7. Switch back to Normal Settings: Adaptation is complete.

Activating Cruise Control (DBW)

New ECUs often have cruise control deactivated. To activate:

  1. Select: 01 – Engine
  2. Login – 11:
  3. Enter Code: 11463
  4. Do It!

CAN Gateway Coding (19 – CAN Gateway)

The CAN Gateway module, located in the instrument cluster, controls CAN-BUS communication. Its coding determines which modules are available on the network. The last digit of the coding represents the sum of the following options:

  • 0: No available equipment
  • +1: Automatic Transmission
  • +2: ABS Brakes
  • +4: Airbags

For example, to enable Automatic Transmission, ABS Brakes, and Airbags, add 1 + 2 + 4 = 7. The coding would be 00007.

Central Convenience (46 – Central Convenience / 35 – Central Locking)

This module controls various convenience features, primarily on vehicles with power windows (module 46) or manual windows (module 35).

Selective Unlocking

  1. Select: 46 – Cent. Conv. (or 35 – Cent. Locking)
  2. Recode – 07: Note the existing coding.
  3. Enter 5-digit Code: Refer to your vehicle’s documentation for the correct coding. Modifying the last digit (odd for selective unlock, even for all doors unlocking simultaneously) changes the unlocking behavior. Adding 1 to the last digit typically changes from single door to all door unlock.
  4. Do It!

Lock/Unlock Horn/Flash Confirmation

  1. Select: 46 – Cent. Conv. (or 35 – Cent. Locking)
  2. Adaptation – 10:
  3. Select Channel:
    • Channel 03: Auto Lock
    • Channel 04: Auto Unlock
    • Channel 05: Unlock Horn Confirmation (1 = On, 0 = Off)
    • Channel 06: Lock Horn Confirmation (1 = On, 0 = Off)
    • Channel 07: Unlock Turn Signal Confirmation (1 = On, 0 = Off)
    • Channel 08: Lock Turn Signal Confirmation (1 = On, 0 = Off)
  4. Enter Adaptation Value: (1 = On, 0 = Off)
  5. Save:

Radio Recoding (56 – Radio)

  1. Select: 56 – Radio
  2. Recode – 07: Note existing coding.
  3. Enter 5-digit Code: Determined by sound system options (see below).
  4. Do It!

Coding Breakdown:

  • Digits 1-2: Sound Field Tuning (00 – Premium IV/V, 04 – Monsoon)
  • Digit 3: Speaker System (0 – Premium V/VI Monsoon, 4 – Premium IV/V/VI Non-Monsoon)
  • Digit 4: Sound Correction (0 – Premium IV/V Non-Monsoon, 4 – Premium V Monsoon)
  • Digit 5: CD Player/Changer (1 – Without, 3 – With, 5 – Without with Display, 7 – With with Display)

For a Passat with Monsoon and a CD changer, the code would be 04043.

Other Modules

VCDS generally works well with the following modules on the Passat B5.5:

  • 02-Auto Trans: KWP-1281
  • 03-ABS Brakes: KWP-1281
  • 08-HVAC: KWP-1281
  • 15-Airbags: KWP-1281
  • 17-Instruments: KWP-1281
  • 22-AWD: Purely mechanical.
  • 35-Central Locks: KWP-1281 (Non-US, manual windows)
  • 37-Navigation: KWP-1281
  • 55-Headlight Range: KWP-1281 (Xenon HID)
  • 58-Fuel Tank: KWP-1281 (W8 only)

This guide provides a starting point for Passat B5.5 VCDS coding. Always consult your vehicle’s documentation and Ross-Tech’s resources for the most accurate and up-to-date information.
