Tired of electronic speed limitations on your vehicle? Want to unleash your engine’s full potential by increasing its top speed? With VCDS (VAG-COM), you can modify the VMAX yourself. This guide provides step-by-step instructions for MQB and older TDI diesel vehicles. However, proceed with caution, as this modification can have safety and legal implications. Always ensure you have a compatible VCDS cable and basic knowledge of its use.

Removing VMAX Limit on MQB Vehicles (VW Golf 7, Passat B8, Audi A3 8V, etc.)
Procedure:
- Connect VCDS: With the engine off and ignition off, connect your official VAG-COM VCDS cable to your computer and then connect the other end to your vehicle’s diagnostic port.
- Turn on Ignition: Turn the ignition on and launch the VCDS software.
- Select Engine Module: Click on “Select” and then click on “01 – Engine.”
- Security Access: Click on “Security Access – 16” and enter the code “27971”.
- Adaptation: Click on “Adaptation – 10”.
- Select Speed Limit Option: In the top dropdown menu, choose “Individually adjustable top speed limit”.
- Set New VMAX: In the second dropdown menu (lower on the page), choose the desired maximum speed in km/h (e.g., 300) and confirm.
Removing VMAX Limit on TDI Diesel Vehicles with EDC15 and EDC16 ECUs
This method applies to older TDI diesel engines with EDC15 and EDC16 ECUs (e.g., Golf 5, A3 8P, Leon 2 with 1.9 TDI, 2.0 TDI engines before 2010).
Step 1: Connect VCDS
With the engine off and ignition off, connect your official VAG-COM VCDS cable to your computer and the vehicle’s diagnostic port.
Step 2: Access Engine Control Unit
Turn the ignition on and launch VCDS. Click “Select” and then “01 – Engine.”
Step 3: Login
- EDC16: Enter login “12233” in “16 – Security Access”.
- EDC15: Enter login “12233” in “11 – Login”.
A confirmation message indicates successful login. This unlocks specific adaptations. Proceed cautiously!
Step 4: Read Current VMAX Value
Depending on your ECU version, read the value of channel 18, 07, or 14 in “10 – Adaptation”. This displays the current speed limit, often set to 190 km/h.
)
Step 5: Modify VMAX Value
Important Warning: Incorrectly modifying this value can permanently limit your vehicle’s speed. Do not lower the speed limit with the initial login. VAG Coding is not responsible for any modifications you make.
- Channel 18: Use login “20973” (accessed via “16 – Security Access” or “11 – Login” depending on your ECU).
- Channel 07: Use login “28575” (accessed via “16 – Security Access” or “11 – Login” depending on your ECU).
After entering the correct login, modify the VMAX value. The maximum achievable speed may be limited to 250 km/h or 300 km/h depending on the vehicle.
Reprogrammation Moteur: When VCDS Isn’t Enough
For vehicles not covered by these instructions, achieving a higher VMAX requires reprogramming the engine’s mapping through professional engine tuning or remapping services. This involves modifying the engine control unit’s software to adjust performance parameters, including the speed limiter. Contact a reputable tuning specialist for this type of modification. Simple adjustments via VCDS will not suffice. A full reprogrammation moteur is necessary.
