Ross-Tech VCDS HEX-CAN: Understanding the Differences and Upgrades

The Ross-Tech VCDS HEX-CAN family of diagnostic interfaces has evolved over time. This article clarifies the key differences between the HEX+CAN and the newer HEX-V2 and HEX-NET interfaces, focusing on performance and future compatibility.

Both the HEX-V2 and HEX-NET utilize a 32-bit microcontroller, resulting in significantly faster communication speeds on vehicles using CAN (Controller Area Network) bus systems compared to the older HEX+CAN. However, for cars relying on the older K-Line protocol, the speed improvement is negligible as it’s limited by the vehicle’s module.

A crucial distinction is the HEX+CAN’s limited compatibility with newer vehicle models (2016+). This interface may not communicate with all modules in these cars due to evolving communication protocols. The HEX-V2 and HEX-NET address this issue, ensuring compatibility with current and future vehicles. If you currently own a pre-2016 vehicle, upgrading is not immediately necessary.

Eventually, the HEX+CAN and previous-generation interfaces will no longer receive software updates. Ross-Tech plans to offer a legacy version of VCDS software for continued use with these older interfaces. However, to access new features and support for the latest vehicles, upgrading to a HEX-V2 or HEX-NET will be required. The timeline for discontinuing support for older interfaces is not yet finalized but is estimated to be at least a year or more away.

The primary difference between the HEX-V2 and HEX-NET lies in connectivity and onboard storage. The HEX-NET features built-in Wi-Fi and local storage, enabling wireless diagnostics with VCDS-Mobile. This allows users to perform diagnostics using smartphones, tablets, and other devices with a web browser, regardless of the operating system. The HEX-V2, on the other hand, relies on a direct USB connection to a computer.

Choosing the right Ross-Tech VCDS interface depends on your specific needs and budget. If wireless functionality and mobile device compatibility are essential, the HEX-NET is the ideal choice. For users primarily working with laptops and requiring a cost-effective solution with up-to-date vehicle compatibility, the HEX-V2 is an excellent option. While the HEX+CAN remains functional for older vehicles, its limited future support makes upgrading to a newer interface a worthwhile investment for long-term diagnostic needs.
