The Ross-Tech VCDS HEX-NET is a powerful and versatile diagnostic interface for Volkswagen and Audi vehicles. Offering both wired and wireless connectivity, this intelligent tool allows users to perform in-depth diagnostics and coding changes using the acclaimed VCDS software.
Features and Benefits of the HEX-NET
The HEX-NET boasts a range of features designed for professional and enthusiast users alike:
- Dual Connectivity: Connect to your PC via high-speed USB or wirelessly using WiFi for greater flexibility.
- Mobile Diagnostics: Utilize VCDS-Mobile on smartphones and tablets for diagnostics on the go. Refer to the VCDS-Mobile function compatibility chart for supported features.
- Broad Vehicle Compatibility: Works with most VW and Audi passenger cars from 1996 to current models, supporting various communication protocols (K, K+L, dual-K, and CAN). Also compatible with many 1990-1995 Audis and 1990-1994 VWs with the “2×2” data link connector (learn more about 2×2 connector compatibility).
- DoIP Support: Newer “HN2” HEX-NETs (in blue housing) support Diagnostics over IP (DoIP) for compatibility with the latest vehicle models. Learn more about DoIP.
- Future-Proof Design: Features a 32-bit microcontroller and updatable firmware to ensure compatibility with future vehicle models and software updates.
- Integrated VCDS License: Acts as a dongle for the VCDS software, allowing installation and use on any compatible PC.
- Durable Construction: Built with a robust housing and a detachable USB cable with a secure locking mechanism. A standard USB-A to USB-B cable can be used temporarily if the original cable is damaged.
- Comprehensive Warranty: Includes a 12-month warranty against defects.
Compatibility and System Requirements
Vehicle Compatibility: The HEX-NET is compatible with almost all diagnostic-capable VW/Audi Group passenger cars from 1990 to the present. Exceptions include:
- Volkswagen Routan vans (all years). These are rebranded Chrysler vehicles and utilize different diagnostic protocols.
- Certain 1991-1994 Audi TDI engines with ECUs that communicate at 240bps. Learn more about the Volkswagen Routan.
Computer Requirements:
- 1 GHz dual-core processor (minimum)
- 1 GB RAM (minimum)
- Windows 7 or newer (Windows 8, 8.1, and 10 are supported on sufficiently powerful hardware). Windows 2000, XP, and Vista may function but are not officially supported.
WiFi Requirements:
- 802.11 b/g at 2.4 GHz (5 GHz WiFi and channels 12 and 13 are not supported).
Additional Information
Extending the Interface: The included 6-foot cable is sufficient for most applications. A 3-foot OBD extension cable is available for purchase if needed. The WiFi capability also provides significant range.
Registration and Resale: Ross-Tech directly purchased interfaces are typically pre-registered. Reseller purchased interfaces require registration within 10-15 uses. Register online using the utility included with VCDS. While the HEX-NET enables VCDS functionality on any compatible PC, product support is limited to the original registered user. Re-registering a used HEX-NET costs $99. Learn more about HEX-NET registration.
Software and Drivers: Use the HEX-NET with the latest version of VCDS. The HEX-NET does not emulate a dumb serial pass-through interface and is unlikely to work with third-party software. The HEX-NET functions as an HID device, generally not requiring special drivers. However, an INF file addressing HID power management issues in Windows 8.1 and newer is included with the VCDS installer. Windows Firewall may require configuration to allow VCDS traffic when using WiFi; the VCDS installer includes an option to pre-configure this.
