Troubleshooting VAG VCDS 16.8.4 Auto-Scan Issues

VCDS 16.8.4 users may encounter problems with the auto-scan function, often failing to complete the process. A common solution involves uninstalling the software, manually deleting remaining files and drivers, and then reinstalling a fresh copy of VCDS 16.8.4 from the official Ross-Tech website. However, this doesn’t always resolve the issue.

Even after a clean reinstall, the auto-scan might still crash. One potential fix is updating VCDS to a newer version. While version 17.1.1 might not always be readily available for download, contacting the cable supplier, such as Gendan, can be helpful. They might suggest a firmware update for the VCDS cable itself.

Attempting a firmware update through VCDS can be challenging, often resulting in timeout errors. Persistence and multiple restarts might eventually allow VCDS to recognize the available 17.1.1 update. Installing this update over the existing 16.8.4 installation can resolve the auto-scan issue.

Despite resolving the auto-scan problem by updating to 17.1.1, the cable firmware update might still fail with timeout errors. In this scenario, the auto-scan functionality is restored with the newer VCDS version, even if the cable firmware remains outdated. While a firmware update is generally recommended, it might not be critical for basic functionality in some cases.
