While VCDS-Lite is the recommended diagnostic software for modern Windows systems, some users still seek to download VCDS 409.1. This guide provides a step-by-step walkthrough for installing this legacy software on Windows 7, specifically for use with Gendan KKL interfaces. We cannot guarantee compatibility with other cables.
Important Note: VCDS 409.1 and the KKL interface do not support diagnostics via the CAN protocol. Most VW/Audi vehicles from 2004 onwards utilize CAN. Consult our VCDS compatibility chart to determine the correct software for your vehicle.
Installing USB Drivers
First, install the necessary USB drivers for your Gendan KKL interface. If your PC has internet access, Windows 7 should automatically find and install the drivers via Windows Update upon connecting the interface. You’ll see notifications indicating driver location and installation progress.
For offline installations, download the drivers from www.gendan.co.uk/download/gendandriver.exe on another computer and transfer them.
Verifying and Adjusting Port Settings
Next, identify the assigned COM port for the interface in Device Manager. Right-click “Computer” on the desktop or Start Menu, select “Properties,” then click “Device Manager.”
Expand “Ports (COM & LPT)” to locate the “USB Serial Port” entry. VCDS 409.1 only works with COM ports 1-4.
If the assigned port is higher than COM4, double-click the “USB Serial Port,” navigate to “Port Settings” -> “Advanced,” and choose an available COM port between 1 and 4.
Downloading and Installing VCDS 409.1
Download VCDS 409.1 (for “MODERN SERIAL Interfaces”) from the Ross-Tech archives: www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/download/archives.html.
Crucially, avoid installing within the “Program Files” folder due to Windows 7’s write protection. Change the installation directory to a different location, for example, C:\Ross-Tech\VAG-COM
.
Configuring VCDS 409.1
Finally, configure the software. Locate the “VAG-COM Release 409-1” shortcut, right-click, select “Properties,” and under the “Compatibility” tab, check “Run this program as an administrator.”
Apply these settings and repeat for the Start Menu shortcut if necessary. Open VCDS 409.1, go to “Options,” select the configured COM port.
Click “Test” then “OK.” Your VCDS 409.1 installation should now be operational. Remember to always consult official Ross-Tech documentation for the most accurate and up-to-date information.
