This guide provides detailed instructions on how to program new keys for your Audi using a VCDS (Vag-Com Diagnostic System). This process focuses on matching radio-frequency remotes, not immobilizer components. For immobilizer matching, consult your vehicle’s Factory Repair Manual or other resources on the Ross-Tech website. Always refer to your Factory Repair Manual before attempting any coding procedures. Ross-Tech is not responsible for any damage resulting from these instructions.
Two Methods for VCDS Key Programming Audi
There are two primary methods for programming keys with VCDS. The first uses Adaptation channels, while the second utilizes Measuring Blocks. Choose the method that works for your specific Audi model.
Method 1: Adaptation Channel Programming
- Gather Your Keys and Tools: Assemble all keys you want to program, including existing ones. You’ll need your VCDS interface and a laptop.
- Ignition On: Insert a working key into the ignition and turn it to the “ON” position without starting the engine.
- Access Central Convenience/Locking Module: Connect your VCDS interface and launch the software. Select:
- [46 – Cent. Conv.] or [35 – Cent. Locking] depending on your vehicle. Refer to the Ross-Tech website for specific module applications.
- [Adaptation – 10]
- Enter Adaptation Channel:
- Input channel “01”. In some Audi models, this might be channel “21”.
- [Read] to display the number of currently stored keys.
- Program New Keys:
- Enter the total number of keys you want to program (up to 4, including existing keys) in “New Value”.
- [Test] to verify the number is correct.
- [Save]
- Match Each Key: Press and hold the UNLOCK button on each key fob for at least one second. You have 15 seconds to complete this for all keys. The car might acknowledge each successful match with flashing lights or a horn beep.
Method 2: Measuring Block Programming (If Adaptation Fails)
If Method 1 doesn’t work, try this procedure:
- Ignition On with Working Key: Insert a working key in the ignition and turn to the “ON” position.
- Access Module and Measuring Blocks: In VCDS, select:
- [46 – Cent. Conv.] or [35 – Cent. Locking]
- [Meas. Blocks – 08]
- Enter group “003” (or “007” in some models).
- [Go!] Field 2 displays the number of matched remotes and their memory positions.
- Lock and Unlock with New Key:
- Lock the car manually with the new key in the driver’s side door lock. You may need to hold the key in the unlock position during the next step.
- Within 5 seconds, rapidly press the UNLOCK button on the new key enough times to reach the next available memory position (e.g., if Field 2 showed “0001,” press twice to reach position 2). The car may acknowledge each press.
- Wait 5 seconds and unlock the door with the new key.
- Verify Matching:
- Turn the ignition OFF and remove the old key.
- Test the new key by locking and unlocking the car.
- Insert the new key in the ignition, turn to “ON,” and repeat steps 2 and 3 to verify the new key is matched in the correct memory position in Field 2 of Measuring Block group 003.
Clearing Existing Keys
If necessary, clear existing keys before programming new ones:
- Access Adaptation: In VCDS, select:
- [46 – Cent. Conv.] or [35 – Cent. Locking]
- [Adaptation – 10]
- Clear Channel 00:
- Enter channel “00”.
- [Read] then [Save] with a value of “0”. Confirm when prompted. This will erase all matched remotes. You will then need to reprogram all keys using one of the methods above.
