VCDS Mobile Service Reset: Understanding the HEX-NET Password

The HEX-NET interface for VCDS Mobile uses a password for security. If you’ve forgotten your password, a simple reset procedure can restore the default password. With the HEX-NET connected to your car or a USB power source, press and hold the red button for 20 seconds. You’ll hear a beep confirming the password reset.

This process indicates the password is stored on the HEX-NET device itself, raising the question of its necessity for average users. The added complexity of remembering a password, especially during initial setup and use with Wi-Fi networks, firmware updates, and VCDS Mobile registration, may outweigh its benefits.

Instead of a password, a more effective security measure against theft could be blacklisting the device’s serial number. If a HEX-NET is lost or stolen, the owner could notify Ross-Tech, who would then blacklist the serial number. This would prevent the device from connecting to VCDS Mobile or downloading firmware updates, effectively rendering it useless to the thief. This approach offers a more streamlined security solution without the added complication of user-managed passwords.

An alternative solution could be allowing users to disable the password feature entirely if they choose to. This would provide flexibility and simplify the user experience for those who prioritize ease of use over the perceived security benefits of a device password. This option would cater to users comfortable with the inherent risks and prefer a less complex interaction with their HEX-NET device.
