This guide provides step-by-step instructions on how to perform a Vcds New Key Adaptation for Volkswagen (VW) and Audi vehicles. This process allows you to program new remote keys to your car using a VCDS diagnostic interface. Important Note: This guide focuses on matching radio-frequency remotes, not immobilizer components. Consult your vehicle’s Factory Repair Manual for immobilizer-related procedures.
Two Methods for VCDS Key Adaptation
There are two primary methods for adapting new keys with VCDS, depending on your vehicle’s specific module.
Method 1: Using Adaptation Channels
-
Gather Your Tools and Keys: You’ll need a VCDS interface, your vehicle, all existing keys, and the new key(s) you want to program.
-
Access Central Convenience or Central Locking: Connect your VCDS interface and turn the ignition ON. Select [46 – Cent. Conv.] or [35 – Cent. Locking] depending on your car model. You can find the correct module in the VCDS applications directory.
-
Enter Adaptation Channel: Go to [Adaptation – 10]. Enter channel “01” (or “21” in some Audi models) and click [Read]. The “Stored Value” will display the number of currently matched keys.
-
Input New Key Count: In “New Value,” enter the total number of keys you want to program (including existing ones), up to a maximum of 4. Click [Test] to verify, then [Save].
-
Program Each Key: Within 15 seconds, press and hold the UNLOCK button on each key for at least one second, one key at a time. Your car may provide visual or audible confirmation (flashing lights, horn beep).
Method 2: Using Measuring Blocks
If Method 1 doesn’t work (channels 01 and 21 unavailable), try this:
-
Prepare with a Working Key: Insert a working key into the ignition and turn it ON (don’t start the engine). Select [46 – Cent. Conv.] or [35 – Cent. Locking] as before.
-
Check Existing Key Count: Go to [Meas. Blocks – 08] and enter group “003” (or “007” in some vehicles). Click [Go!]. Field 2 will display the number and position of currently matched keys. For instance, “0001” means one key is matched in position 1.
-
Match the New Key: Lock the car from the outside using the new, unmatched key in the driver’s side door lock. Within 5 seconds, repeatedly press the UNLOCK button on the new key enough times to reach the next available memory position. For example, if Field 2 showed “0001”, press the UNLOCK button twice to program the new key to position 2. The car may acknowledge each press.
-
Finalize the Process: Wait 5 seconds, then press the UNLOCK button on the new key to unlock the door. Turn the ignition OFF and remove the old key. Test the new key by locking and unlocking the car.
-
Verify the New Key: Insert the new key into the ignition and turn it ON. Navigate back to [Meas. Blocks – 08] and group “003” (or “007”). Field 2 should now show both the old and new keys matched in their respective positions.
Clearing Existing Keys
If necessary, you can clear all matched remotes: Select [46 – Cent. Conv.] or [35 – Cent. Locking], then [Adaptation – 10]. Enter channel “00”, click [Read], then [Save]. Confirm when prompted. This will erase all learned keys, requiring you to program them again using one of the methods above. Remember to always refer to your vehicle’s Factory Repair Manual for specific instructions and safety precautions. Improper key adaptation could lead to malfunctions. Using VCDS requires technical knowledge and should be done with caution.
