VCDS TT MK1: Simplifying the ABS Brake Bleeding Process

Bleeding the brakes on a first-generation Audi TT (MK1) can be a daunting task, especially with the complex procedures outlined in the manual. However, using a diagnostic tool like Ross-Tech’s VCDS (Vag-Com Diagnostic System) can significantly simplify this process. This guide outlines the steps involved in bleeding the brakes on a Vcds Tt Mk1, utilizing a Motive power bleeder and the VCDS software for precise instructions.

Utilizing VCDS for Guided Brake Bleeding

The VCDS software provides step-by-step instructions for bleeding the brakes, eliminating the ambiguity often found in traditional manuals. Here’s a detailed breakdown of the process:

Preparing for the Bleed

  1. Close all bleeder valves: Ensure all bleeder valves on each caliper are tightly closed.
  2. Connect the power bleeder: Attach the Motive power bleeder to the brake fluid reservoir and maintain a pressure below 1 BAR (approximately 10 psi).
  3. Connect VCDS: Connect the VCDS interface to the OBD-II port and turn the ignition on.

Accessing the Brake Bleeding Procedure in VCDS

  1. Auto-Scan: From the VCDS main screen, initiate an Auto-Scan and select “Chassis 8N – Audi TT (1999 > 2007)”.

  2. Select Control Module: Return to the main screen and select “Select”. Choose “03-ABS Brakes” from the control module list.

  3. Basic Settings: Within the ABS Brakes module, select “Basic Settings – 04”.

Following the VCDS Guided Instructions

  1. Group 001: Initially, VCDS will display Group 000. Click the “Up” button to reach Group 001 – “Brake Pump Bleeding Instructions”. The screen will prompt you to “Press Pedal and Hold”. Doing so activates the ABS pump.

  2. Release Pedal and Open Front Bleeder Screws: Once the pump settles, the instructions will change to “Release Pedal FR+FL bleed Screws OPEN”. Open the bleeder screws on both front calipers and allow fluid to flow until clear and free of bubbles.

  3. Group 002: Close the front bleeder screws and click “Up” in VCDS to access Group 002. Follow the on-screen prompts, which involve pressing the pedal multiple times.

  4. Group 003: Continue to Group 003 and repeat the process of pressing and holding the pedal as instructed. This may release additional air from the system.

Final Bleeding Procedure

After completing the VCDS-guided steps, perform a traditional bleed of each caliper using the power bleeder, following the sequence: Left Front (LF), Right Front (RF), Left Rear (LR), Right Rear (RR). For each caliper:

  1. Open the bleeder screw and let fluid flow until bubble-free.
  2. With the bleeder screw open, slowly pump the brake pedal five times.
  3. Close the bleeder screw and replace the rubber cap.

Post-Bleed Procedures and Verification

After bleeding, perform a road test and the necessary bedding procedure for new brake pads and rotors if applicable. A final VCDS scan can confirm the absence of any fault codes related to the ABS system.

This comprehensive approach, combining the precision of VCDS with the efficiency of a power bleeder, ensures a thorough and effective brake bleeding process on a VCDS TT MK1, resulting in a firm and responsive brake pedal.
