VCDS Volkswagen Polo: Fixing Reversing Light LED Errors

The Volkswagen Polo’s Body Control Module (BCM) manages both incandescent and LED lights using “Leuchte-sets.” If you’re using VCDS and encountering an error with your Polo’s reversing lights after switching to LEDs, this guide will help you understand the problem and find a solution. The error likely stems from a mismatch between the BCM’s expected current draw and the actual draw of the LED lamp.

Understanding the “Leuchte-set” for Reversing Lights

In your Polo’s BCM, Leuchte28RFL C3 is the specific Leuchte-set designated for the reversing light. Within this set, the Type_Of_Load channel informs the BCM about the type of bulb installed. If this channel is configured for an incandescent bulb while you have an LED installed, an error will occur. This is because incandescent bulbs draw a significantly higher current than LEDs. The BCM, expecting the higher current, flags an error when it detects the lower draw of the LED.

Furthermore, the Dimming_AB setting within the Leuchte-set dictates the maximum illumination level. A value of 100, typically for incandescent bulbs, suggests an incorrect setting for LEDs. LEDs generally use a maximum illumination value of 127.

Resolving the Error with VCDS

To rectify the error, you need to modify the ENG124888-ENG115494-Leuchte28RFL C3-Type_Of_Load_28 setting within VCDS. Choose a value from the available options that explicitly includes “LED” in its description. While the specific “40 allgemeine LED” setting might not be available in your vehicle, selecting any LED-specific option will generally resolve the issue. The key is to align the BCM’s expectation with the actual LED installation. “allgemeine” translates to “general” and is a good starting point. Don’t be afraid to experiment; finding the right setting often involves some trial and error.

Additionally, adjust the ENG124888-ENG115499-Leuchte28RFL C3-Dimming_AB_28 setting to 127. While this won’t noticeably increase brightness, it’s the technically correct value for LED lamps and ensures proper configuration within the BCM.

By making these adjustments using VCDS, you can eliminate the reversing light error in your Volkswagen Polo and ensure the BCM correctly manages your LED upgrade. Remember to save your changes after each adjustment.
