UDL Scan Tool: Enhancing Online Curriculum Accessibility

The Udl Scan Tool, developed by the Center on Online Learning and Teaching, helps evaluate K-12 online curriculum accessibility beyond traditional accessibility checks. Based on the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework, the tool measures how well K-12 online learning materials align with the cognitive and learning needs of all students, including those with disabilities. It provides educators, parents, and developers with insights into the strengths and weaknesses of digital learning resources.

Evaluating Online Learning with the UDL Framework

The UDL Scan Tool incorporates the three core UDL principles, nine guidelines, and associated checkpoints. This comprehensive approach allows for a thorough examination of online learning products. By utilizing the tool, stakeholders can identify areas where materials may fall short in meeting the diverse learning needs of students. This process facilitates informed decisions about curriculum selection and improvement.

The tool has undergone rigorous reliability and validity testing. Researchers have used it to analyze over 1,000 online lessons from six popular K-12 online learning platforms. The findings from this research, published in “Invited In: Measuring UDL in Online Learning,” highlight the importance of incorporating UDL principles in digital learning environments. This study underscores the value of the UDL Scan Tool in promoting inclusive education practices.

Accessing and Utilizing the UDL Scan Tool

The UDL Scan Tool is available as an interactive Google Form. Users must log into their Google Account and make a copy of the form for personal use. An Excel template is also available to assist with data analysis, although it’s not required to use the tool.

To further support users, instructional videos demonstrating how to use the UDL Scan Tool and the accompanying Excel template have been developed. These resources guide users through the process of effectively utilizing the tool to evaluate online learning materials. This ensures that educators and other stakeholders can maximize the benefits of the tool.

Improving Accessibility in Digital Learning

The UDL Scan Tool empowers educators and developers to create more inclusive and effective online learning experiences. By identifying areas for improvement, the tool promotes the development of digital materials that cater to the diverse needs of all learners. The Center encourages districts and vendors to leverage this valuable resource to enhance the accessibility of their digital materials.
